Frequency of Posts

Posted by titusferguson on February 8, 2008

Nothing of much interest has grabbed my attention over the last few days so I haven’t really published anything on here. Which I’m sure may have gone undetected by many of my readers, since the majority of my traffic seems directed towards archived posts.

But this slight hiatus got me thinking about what and why I write, about my readers and the resulting daily statistics. I know that its good blogging to write daily, but is it worth turning out some half-assed post just to check “blog post” off the daily to do list?

I’d  much rather write something relevant with insightful commentary every other day then one mediocre post every day. What do my readers think? Not just on this blog, but would you rather wait to read something longer that makes you think, or just hear a few words from your favorite blogger regardless of quality? I a quick link or video on occaision enough to ensure a return visit?

Don’t worry, I have a couple of longer posts that I’m working on. Ones that actually require research…

Current Life State

Posted by titusferguson on January 16, 2008

I think its time for an update about whats going on in my life right now. I know I primarily blog about technology, but when I first started it wasn’t like that. Some people who read this might actually care about me as a person too…

I’ve started going back to school this term. After working full time for the past 8 months, its been quite a transition for me. I’m enjoying not having to get up as early in the morning. However when I find that I get bored a lot easier. Working took up a lot of my time, more then is currently been used in school.

My courses have been pretty light this year; Canadian geography, cell biology, advanced plant physiology, philosophy of language. They have all been interesting with decent profs so I should have no trouble focusing on the work.

I’ve started “exercising” more too. Since I’m no longer working I need to remain active. I’ve already been running and swimming this week, finally getting some use of the school gym. I’m also working with weights to keep my strength up. I want to return to work in May and not be so out of shape that I’m in extreme pain by the end of the day.

First Day Back At School

Posted by titusferguson on January 7, 2008

So, as the title suggests, today is my first day back at school for the 2007/2008 winter term. While I did take two courses last term, the majority of my time was spent working. I’ve finished working until May and will spend the next four months focusing on school.

Even now I’m still undecided about how I feel about heading back. I experienced a certain amount of freedom while working full time that I had hitherto not known. At the same time though with only 4 courses and 11 hours of total class time, going back to school feels almost like a vacation compared to 9.5 hour days and 6 am wakeups.

I lot of how I feel is going to depend on how my courses go too. I’m looking forward to a couple of them, which is important obviously. But I am also forced to take a couple of courses I really don’t want to, only to finish up my degree.

I really have nothing to complain about though, I’ve had a very cushy 4+ years here at school, and as it winds down I’m sure I’ll spend a lot of time reminiscing about the past.

But for now, its time to focus on class…

A New Adventure in Hi-Fi

Posted by titusferguson on January 3, 2008

Last night I attended the January Geek Dinner. (Held on the first Wednesday of every month at Molly Bloom’s in London ON). While there, Bill Deys told me about IODA Promonet, a service similar to PodSafe Music.

IODA Promonet allows you to browse through artists, songs, and record labels. All the music is safe to post on blogs, or to play on podcasts.  From their site:

Promonet is a unique promotional music distribution network that provides its users with a new way to legally download, publish, and share music. Promonet is run by IODA, the leading digital distributor of independent digital music. More than 3000 of the best and most influential independent record labels distribute their music through IODA, and they have given IODA permission to make thousands of their tracks available to Promonet users.

This has got me thinking, I’ve always tossed around the idea of doing a small, independent music based podcasts. Just a few songs that I’m currently digging, and probably little to no dialogue. Now that I have an account with Promonet I might just do it.

So keep an eye out the next few days/weeks, I might have something up!

A Refreshing Look Back

Posted by titusferguson on December 13, 2007

I know I need to post something, and I apologize to anyone that has already seen this.

I was thinking today about some of the posts I wrote years ago, (Yeah, I can’t believe it, I’ve been blogging for over three and a half years!) and I remembered this one, one of my all time favorites.

Without further ado, I present you: “Pogs”

I’ve always considered myself to be somewhat in the know in regards to cultural phenomenon. Throughout grade school I was always “in-tune” with what was “going-down” during recesses. High school was a bit more difficult but I think I can honestly say I was the fellow who led the pack. It has been the same throughout post-secondary as well; where do you think the Ugg boot fad came from?

As a result of my prestige in such matters, I feel it is my solemn duty to correct a wrong, to aid generation “find themselves,” to help an older generation re-discover their “inner child.”

In case you don’t yet know what I’m talking about, it’s POGs. Those small circular cardboard discs that defined, oh so many, generations of children. Anyone over sixteen can bring to mind many a story revolving around POGs.

When I flip through my photo albums and come across pictures from around grade 5, a little part of me dies inside because I see not only my jubilant smile on every page, but I recognize the angelic joy that characterized my childhood as a result of the time I spent with POGs.

It’s for no small reason that POG stands for “Pieces of Greatness”. And we’ve let these “toys of the gods” fall by the wayside. How can we stand idly by and let such a thing happen? Have we, as a generation, no morality, no sense of right or wrong?

My heart beats rapidly as I ponder the fate of the POG. Will the name “Pog” evoke memories of merriment, wonder, and mirth, or will it simply be remembered as a craze that vanished even more quickly than that of Sea Monkeys or Pet Rocks? I’m afraid that if this current apathy continues, our children’s lives will be in jeopardy. The foundational core of relationships is shared experience, and with no memory or knowledge of POGs how can we expect to connect to our children in any meaningful way?

Poggers Unite! For too long have we let this fun and entertaining sport languish, its memory fade, and slowly be replaced by imported games from Asia.

This Cultural Revolution is not without its naysayers. I was reminded of this just the other day when the following story was related to me. In some circles it has been considered “cool” to collect trading cards of popular TV shows, I know, forgive them for their foolishness. Occasionally POGs would be included in packages of these “trading cards” rather than praising their good fortune, these folks would be angered by this blessing. Obviously such fools will stop at nothing to halt the re-distribution of POGs into the mainstream.

We must continue the battle until we see the POG regain its rightful place on the shelves. Like the Rubiks Cube, we need to open our hearts to POGs and bring them back–how can we refuse after all that they’ve done for us?

Billy: “Boy, do I miss POGs.”

Peggy: “So do I, Billy.”

B: “Don’t you wish they made such classy pieces of cardboard today, Peggy?”

P: “I sure do, Billy.”

Around the world, similar conversations reverberate.

POGs: For the Children.”

Well, its been a long time since I last put anything up on here. And I really have no good reason why I haven’t. Perhaps nothing has interested me enough lately to deserve a blog post.

I do know though that there will be something more substantial here sometime next week. I’m all done my classes, exams and papers on Tuesday. I’m hoping to start blogging effectively after that.

Until then

Montreal Smoked Meat

Posted by titusferguson on October 8, 2007

So on Saturday night I was down at Centennial Hall in London for a Tegan and Sara concert. It was a great show, lots of songs from the previous two albums as well as some earlier stuff. T & S are known for telling stories on stage, unfortunatly, this show didn’t have as many as I was expecting. Despite the horrible opening act it was am enjoyable evening.

After leaving Centennial Hall, I went down to The Richmond Tavern, where a co-worker of mine’s band was playing; Hunting For Joseph. I was pleasantly surprised with their sound. Kinda Nu-Rock, but without the pretension and crap. I didn’t stay long though because it was really hot in there, and some friends were waiting for me.

Starting walking downtown and decided to stop for a smoked meat sandwich at Cousin Vinny’s. I’ve had their lean on rye before and it was quite good. This time though, the fellow at the counter was totally inept and didn’t know how to even make a smoked meat sandwich. After five mintues of wandering around the couter aimlessly, he asked me if I would prefer a slice of pizza. I was tired of waiting, so I said sure and took two huge slices for all my trouble.

A good Saturday night. Now its turkey day!

Time For A Change of Topics

Posted by titusferguson on July 26, 2007

I apologize for the long break between posts, but I’m sure many of you reading this now didn’t really care. Although the majority of my blog has been about technology I’m going to write about literature.

Lately I’ve been reading a whole lot of really badly written novels and I was tired of that and I wanted something a little more substantial. So I decided to start reading award-winning novels, and I’ve started with the Pulitzer Prize. I’ve got a list of all the winners from 1947 to the present and I’m hoping to be able to read them all.

Before I got onto that project I picked up a book at the local library: “A Box of Matches” by Nicholson Baker. Not an award winning novel, but it looked interesting enough so I had to check it out.

This book was perhaps one of the most unusual books I’ve read. Written in the first person is follows the brand new habit of waking up before dawn, starting a fire, and just thinking. Except for the fact that I’m holding a physical book in my hands, it has the feel of an online blog. Nothing really happens, no plot is advanced, and the characters are no further ahead at the end of the book.

It provides and interesting read and at time humorous as the man character discusses his theories on washing machines, why certain leafs fall off the tree and describes the families pet duck daily routines. While no Pulitzer winner, it provided a mild diversion and a quick easy read.

I’m currently reading “The Stories of John Cheever” which is an award winning novel. I’m quite enjoying it, although it is 800 pages long. It might be a while before you get a full review of that one.

Last One for A While

Posted by titusferguson on May 9, 2007

Some of you might know this, and some of you might not, but I’m leaving tomorrow morning for a two month job planting trees in Northern Ontario. I’ll be gone until sometime until the beginning/middle of July. So that means there will be no more blog posts for quite some time. I might try to get something out on one of my days off, if I can find internet access somewhere.

I hope I’ll still have all my readers when I get back.

On a more interesting note. I love seeing what Google searches are bringing people to this site. The top hits of late have been:

RSS Facebook Status
Twitterfeed Facebook
Funny Facebook Status
Romantic Facebook Status
Funny Facebook Status Updates
Link  Twitter to Facebook

So apparently I’m a Twitter and Facebook guru… who knew
