London Indie Media Fair

Posted by titusferguson on March 26, 2008

This Saturday is the 3rd annual London Indie Media Fair from 1 to 5 pm. The event is taking place at the Central library in downtown London at 251 Dundas Street.

There is both an exhibit hall in Stevenson and Hunt and a presentation room in the Lerner’s and Tonda Rooms.

Myself, Bill Deys, and Greg Fowler will be heading down to promote blogging and podcasting, as well as our monthly geek dinners. I’d encourage anyone in the London area to come down and say hello. Hopefully there will be some other bloggers there and we can help the online community in London grow.

More Free Wireless

Posted by titusferguson on January 11, 2008

Continuing my quest to list all the locations in London with free wireless internet. Alex P. Keaton, a bar/restaurant/concert venue provides its clients with free wi-fi. I have yet to try it out, I just noticed the sign there last night but didn’t have my macbook with me to try it out.

Added to the ongoing list

Free Wireless Internet

Posted by titusferguson on January 7, 2008

I’ve started a page on this blog listing all the areas in London Ontario that offer free wireless internet. Obviously you can find it at the top of the page, under the heading “Free Wireless Internet

I want to include as many places and locations around the city that I can so if you know of any please email me and I’ll add them to the list. My  email can be found under the “Contact” page.

Eventually I’d like to get a more in depth analysis of the free wireless around London, possibly comments on speed and over all quality reviews.

A New Adventure in Hi-Fi

Posted by titusferguson on January 3, 2008

Last night I attended the January Geek Dinner. (Held on the first Wednesday of every month at Molly Bloom’s in London ON). While there, Bill Deys told me about IODA Promonet, a service similar to PodSafe Music.

IODA Promonet allows you to browse through artists, songs, and record labels. All the music is safe to post on blogs, or to play on podcasts.  From their site:

Promonet is a unique promotional music distribution network that provides its users with a new way to legally download, publish, and share music. Promonet is run by IODA, the leading digital distributor of independent digital music. More than 3000 of the best and most influential independent record labels distribute their music through IODA, and they have given IODA permission to make thousands of their tracks available to Promonet users.

This has got me thinking, I’ve always tossed around the idea of doing a small, independent music based podcasts. Just a few songs that I’m currently digging, and probably little to no dialogue. Now that I have an account with Promonet I might just do it.

So keep an eye out the next few days/weeks, I might have something up!

A Refreshing Look Back

Posted by titusferguson on December 13, 2007

I know I need to post something, and I apologize to anyone that has already seen this.

I was thinking today about some of the posts I wrote years ago, (Yeah, I can’t believe it, I’ve been blogging for over three and a half years!) and I remembered this one, one of my all time favorites.

Without further ado, I present you: “Pogs”

I’ve always considered myself to be somewhat in the know in regards to cultural phenomenon. Throughout grade school I was always “in-tune” with what was “going-down” during recesses. High school was a bit more difficult but I think I can honestly say I was the fellow who led the pack. It has been the same throughout post-secondary as well; where do you think the Ugg boot fad came from?

As a result of my prestige in such matters, I feel it is my solemn duty to correct a wrong, to aid generation “find themselves,” to help an older generation re-discover their “inner child.”

In case you don’t yet know what I’m talking about, it’s POGs. Those small circular cardboard discs that defined, oh so many, generations of children. Anyone over sixteen can bring to mind many a story revolving around POGs.

When I flip through my photo albums and come across pictures from around grade 5, a little part of me dies inside because I see not only my jubilant smile on every page, but I recognize the angelic joy that characterized my childhood as a result of the time I spent with POGs.

It’s for no small reason that POG stands for “Pieces of Greatness”. And we’ve let these “toys of the gods” fall by the wayside. How can we stand idly by and let such a thing happen? Have we, as a generation, no morality, no sense of right or wrong?

My heart beats rapidly as I ponder the fate of the POG. Will the name “Pog” evoke memories of merriment, wonder, and mirth, or will it simply be remembered as a craze that vanished even more quickly than that of Sea Monkeys or Pet Rocks? I’m afraid that if this current apathy continues, our children’s lives will be in jeopardy. The foundational core of relationships is shared experience, and with no memory or knowledge of POGs how can we expect to connect to our children in any meaningful way?

Poggers Unite! For too long have we let this fun and entertaining sport languish, its memory fade, and slowly be replaced by imported games from Asia.

This Cultural Revolution is not without its naysayers. I was reminded of this just the other day when the following story was related to me. In some circles it has been considered “cool” to collect trading cards of popular TV shows, I know, forgive them for their foolishness. Occasionally POGs would be included in packages of these “trading cards” rather than praising their good fortune, these folks would be angered by this blessing. Obviously such fools will stop at nothing to halt the re-distribution of POGs into the mainstream.

We must continue the battle until we see the POG regain its rightful place on the shelves. Like the Rubiks Cube, we need to open our hearts to POGs and bring them back–how can we refuse after all that they’ve done for us?

Billy: “Boy, do I miss POGs.”

Peggy: “So do I, Billy.”

B: “Don’t you wish they made such classy pieces of cardboard today, Peggy?”

P: “I sure do, Billy.”

Around the world, similar conversations reverberate.

POGs: For the Children.”

No More TV Links

Posted by titusferguson on October 23, 2007

So after several days of being unable to access http://www.tv-links.co.uk I decided to find out what had happened.

Well according to this article in The Register, he was arrested for violating trademark laws and the site shut down: “TV-Links man was arrested under trademark laws”

Its really too bad, cause I had just recently discovered the site and was really enjoying their full listings of all the shows I wanted to watch. Looks like I’ll have to go back to bittorrent again.

Here’s the full listing of related stories on Google

The Continuing Saga of Syncing Word Docs and Google Docs

Posted by titusferguson on October 16, 2007

Ok, this is starting to get really interesting. Originally I wrote a wish about syncing word and Google docs.

Then in this post I discovered a bit of a solution regarding uploading in bulk to Google.

I just discovered a post on TechChruch that completely solves the whole problem. An application called DocSyncer that will automatically upload all your hard drive based documents to Google. They claim its a small application that runs in the background. While I am never a fan of more things running in the background this is pretty cool.

Right now its just in beta and currently only available to windows users, but we’re on the right track!

Sync Word and Google Docs: A Solution

Posted by titusferguson on October 9, 2007

So a while back I posted a query about syncing all the documents stored on my hard drive with Google documents online. While browsing around Google Docs I was able to find a bit of a solution.

If you go to upload a file and browse a little  further down the page, you’ll see the option to email-in documents and files. Using your unique email address you can send an email with all the documents you want uploaded as attachments.

I’ve tried it out and it works great.
